Second phase of new retirement living development gets underway in Kidderminster
Building work has officially started on a £8.7million new build retirement living project in Kidderminster.
Energy and regeneration specialist ENGIE will develop the second phase of the extra care complex at Berrington Court, located off Stourport Road, on behalf of The Community Housing Group.
The new development, which will be built on derelict land on Felix Baxter Drive, is comprised of 65 one and two-bed apartments, and will be connected to the first phase through a walkway, to create one of the largest independent living schemes in the Wyre Forest district.
The first phase, built by ENGIE back in 2016, is made up of 100 apartments and communal areas including a restaurant and café bar, lounges, a cinema, beauty salon and activity space. The residents of the second phase will have access to all the facilities, to enhance the lives of those that live there.
Lee Stoneystreet, Regional Director for ENGIE’s Places & Communities division, said: “At ENGIE, our goal is to improve lives by creating better living environments for local people, so we are delighted to begin work on this much-needed extra care complex for the over 55’s.
“These high quality new homes have been carefully designed to integrate seamlessly within its surroundings to complement the Wyre Forest area, and we hope that residents will enjoy living here when the development completes in December this year.”
Councillor Nicky Martin, Wyre Forest District Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, Health, Wellbeing and Democratic Services said: “We are pleased that phase 2 of the Berrington Court development is underway. This will provide good quality and affordable homes for the over 55’s and meet a growing need for this type of extra care provision.”
Matt Cooney, Group Chief Executive for The Community Housing Group said: “We have commissioned the extension based on the success of the original scheme and due to the need for extra care being so high among the local community in the Wyre Forest. We also provide the care service to the scheme which has recently been rated as good by the Care Quality Commission. We are really proud of Berrington Court and the extension to the scheme will make it even more successful.”
